Adi Badri

Adi Badri, one of the Panch (five) Badri pilgrimages in Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand, India, is a group of 16 temples, the main of which is the Narayan temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located 17 kilometers from Karnaprayag in the Uttarkashi district. Adi or Aadi Badri is the ancient abode of Lord Vishnu, also known as ‘Badri’ in Badrikshetra, Uttarakhand. It is believed that Lord Vishnu lived in Adi Badri during the Satya, Treta, and Dwapar Yugas (eras) before moving to Badrinath during the Kali Yuga. According to the prophecy, Lord Vishnu will relocate to Bhavishya Badri in Satya Yuga following the completion of the running era, Kali Yuga. Adi Badri, the first Badri abode among Sapta Badri and one of the Panch Badri, holds religious significance and attracts char dham yatra tour operators thousands of pilgrims each year. The religious significance of Adi Badri is heightened by the belief that Maharshi Veda Vyas (the sage who divided Veda into four Vedas: Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda) wrote Shree Mad Bhagwat Geeta (delivered by God himself) at Adi Badri. Adi Badri pilgrimages are located 3,133 meters above sea level.

Aadi Guru Shankaracharya initiated the construction of the Adi Badri pilgrimages while establishing Hindu temples throughout India and some parts of Nepal in the eighth century. Every year, during the Akshya tritiya of the Hindu calendar month of Baisakh (April-May), a large number of locals and devotees from other districts gather to pay devotional visits to Adi Badri. On the Hindu calendar’s Kartik (November-December) Purnima (full moon day), a large crowd gathers to attend the Kapal Mochan fair in Adi Badri. Devotees take holy dips in Kapal Mochan kund, worship idols in temples, and enjoy the fair.

Major temples in Adi Badri

The Narayan temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is considered the main temple among the 16 on the Adi Badri premises. The Narayan temple stands out from the other temples in Adi Badri with its raised pyramidal platform. The most revered Dhams char dham yatra (pilgrimages) in Adi Badri are a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, another to Mantra Devi, and a Kund on the premises, which is considered the origin point of the Saraswati river.

Saraswati River, Adi Badri

It is believed that the Saraswati River, named after the goddess of purity and intellect, originates in Adi Badri. According to the Rigveda, the Saraswati river is “the one who goes pure from the mountains as far as the sea”. With urbanization and industries connecting sewage into rivers, the Saraswati River has dried up, as it was the only way to keep herself pure from corrupted human activities. The Hindu holy epic Mahabharata describes how sage Utathya cursed Saraswati, causing her to dry up.
